HALF- DAY TECHNICAL VISIT TO SMART TUNNEL

IEM G&S organised a half day Technical Visit on 8 Dec 2007 to SMART Motorway Control Center Jalan Davis, Off Bulatan Kg Pandan. Total of 20 participants with 13 IEM members, UCSI (University College Sedaya International) students, 1 IET member and 2 private individuals participated in the visit. The visit started at 9.30 and ends at 20 noon.

This visit was an excellent opportunity to understand the concept of smart tunnel which has been verbiage to most of us. The philosophy behind flood mitigation via smart tunnel a premier project in KL was explored. The visit was handled by Smart JV whom involved in project planning till the execution. They are given the concession for 10 yrs in managing the smart tunnel. Their warm welcome and excellent briefing has indulged all the members. Everyone given the opportunity to watch video presentation and followed by sharing session – Tea Break.

The presentation and Q&A session covered the project planning, construction, smart tunnel concept, Engineering innovation and latest technologies in tunnel building. The talk was concluded with soft part of the operation (i.e. challenges and limitation) and public and government related issues.

Indeed all of us concluded that the Smart Tunnel is definitely an Engineering wonders made in Malaysia by Malaysian. The Engineering acumen complemented by Hunger for Innovation has astonished all of us. The Malaysian Capability in development far surpluses by what is always commented by public.

As a nutshell, the visit was very fulfilling and eye-opener to many of us in the field of tunnel construction.

Introduction To Vector Drives

Introduction To Vector Drives

Date : 6th December 2007

Time : 7.00 pm to 9.00 p.m

Venue : IEM Conference Hall, 2nd Floor, Petaling Jaya

Speaker : Mr. Hew Wooi Ping, PhD(Malaya), CEng., PEng.

Total Participants : 41 pax

Dr. Hew, has been working on Vector Drives for the last 13 years, his vast experience was put into public interest via his talk Introduction to Vector Drives. He shared his practical experience and theoretical knowledge with the participants who showed great interest to grasp the information.

The talk was focused into introducing the future trend of application, with the advent of digital processing technologies and power electronics converters. The use of dc-motor drives is far becoming obsolete and is now being replaced by ac-motor vector drives in many applications today. This is fore more true as vector drives attempts to control an ac-motor just like a dc-motor.

Dr. Hew completed the evening talk with a phrase for all participants that reads, “the more you burn, the more you learn”. This phrase has a deep meaning, which interprets, knowledge is only gained with experience and to gain experience you need to try until you succeed. This 3rd joint venture talk with IET was also a success as the previous two events (talk by Dr. Vigna and Mr. Satha).

IEM-IET Talk on Principle of Motor.

Prepared by Hardeep Singh Chahil
Blogged by Lee Mei Ping

IEM-IET Talk on Principle of Motor.

Synopsis of Talk:

DC motors have been known for their simplicity and ease of control especially in applications that are related to precision motion control. However, with the advent of digital signal processing technologies and power electronic converters, the use of dc motor drives has been replaced by ac-motor vector drives in many applications. Vector drives attempts to control an ac motor like a dc motor.

This talk will introduce the scalar drives and explain the basic principles/benefits of vector drives. Its aim is to provide some fundamental information for mechanical and electrical engineers who are involved in the operation and maintenance of vector drives.

Biodata of speaker:

Dr. Hew Wooi Ping obtained his BEng. (Electrical) and Master of Electrical Engineering from UTM. In 2000, he graduated with a PhD from University of Malaya. He has been working on vector drives since 1994. He has been teaching electrical machines and drives in the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Malaya since 1998. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department.

Please find enclosed herewith a softcopy of the leaflet for the talk scheduled on 6th December 2007 at 7 - 9 pm, by Dr. Hew on Introduction to Vector Drives.

    IEM G&S -YES retreat!!!

Here is our IEM YES retreat at Port Dickson Beach….

Yes, it is 8 & 9 September 2007 IEM YES retreat gathering. (There is a deal between us that who are using “IEM G&S” instead of “IEM YES”, have to pay RM1.00 as punishment, and Chau Fong is the first one who get punished since he is the first to give speech during our IEM YES KRA/KPI presentation. Haha.)

Firstly, have to introduce our two new IEM YES volunteer from UM and Alstorm – Chi Hoe and Jin Kiat.

After short self-introduction and IEM YES presentation, we prepare ourself for dinner. The food stall has quite nice food (But it might just because we all have waited too long for the food). The bad is some flies keep flying above our dishes when we are eating. Yucks *-*

After dinner, guys go out to enjoy their Saturday night and girls stay in apartment watching television and zzzZZZ….

    The next morning, nasi lemak and then… 1, 2, 3, 4 one more time 1, 2, 3, 4. Let’s warm up.

We first play volley ball in two teams. And then we play futsal. That is the first time I realize that how hard it can be playing futsal on sand. The final game is guy team VS (girl + 1 guy helper) team. Guess which team is the winner? Anyway, we all have our prize. One ice-cream. Yeah.

Come to Port Dickson, how can we forget to swim? And we are not only swimming, but also jumping, throwing, yelling… There is a lot of fun this morning.

Overall, I’m really having a good time. Hopefully more will join us next time. See ya.

    Moment of Glory...

The goal is not to emerge as champion but to be an eye opener to everyone.
It is definitely to build our own image as Young Engineers Section (YES!)

"...The big question is whether you're going going to give a big hearty YES! to your adventure..."
    -Joseph Campbell

Though we did not emerge as the champion, but somehow or rather we are proud to finish at the third placing.

Power Quality talk was the first ground breaking event that was given by Dr. R. Vigna Kumaran, chairman of Younger Members Section, IET Malaysia to Graduate Engineers of both Professional Institutions. It was well attended by 46 junior and senior engineers, and based on their feedback, it was a valuable experience and opportunity to learn on Power Quality Talk.

The talk was divided into two parts, namely Part 1 – Basic of Power Quality Issue, causes and effect, Part 2 – mitigating techniques, voltage harmonic and sagging issue.

In summary, Dr Vigna presented lots of practical case studies that related to Power Industries so that Practical Engineers could understand how’s the motors or generators in factories or power stations to be applied to Power Quality issue, some possible techniques to avoid voltage sagging issue and harmonic effect on the overall system.

Lastly, all the participants are invited to attend coming jointly organized activities in November 2007.
