We were cordially invited by Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association (VUSTA), the host country, to represent Malaysia young engineers to gather and meet other Young Engineers’ Leader from ASEAN country in Vietnam to address the theme of “Engineering and Technology for a better quality of life in response to climate change challenges”.
This year, IEM G&S YES has sent 13 delegates including 3 students to attend the event, leading by the Chairman of Young Engineer Section, Engr. Shuhairy Norhisham. The involvement of the students in such program is to let them expose more in the engineering organization and gain some knowledge through the seminars and technical visits.
We reached Hanoi on 31th October 2010 to set up IEM booth as to promote IEM and IEM G&S YES activities. We were impressed by the hosted country on the welcoming dinner. The president from the VUSTA had given a welcoming speech to start the ceremony. This dinner creates a platform for the engineers from the countries to get know each other before the conference starts. This is important so that all the meetings can run through smoothly.
On the 1st day of the conference, 1st December 2010, all of the representatives from the ASEAN country were presented their country report during the CAFEO meeting in the morning session. In the afternoon, the YEAFEO board meeting were conducted and chaired by the chairman of Young Engineer Section of VUSTA. Representatives from the Young Engineers Section in respective country’s engineer associations were presented their country report. Besides that, there are several issue have been discussed during that YAFEO meeting. Issue such as collaboration of activity within various countries, internship collaboration and communication within ASEAN Young Engineer were discussed.
On the next day, 2nd December 2010, we were pleased to be invited to technical visit to Hanoi Museum and Convention Center Complex. The Hanoi Museum is new museum, with the shape of inverted pyramid and it was inaugurated on first Wednesday in November as part of the millennial celebrations at the Vietnamese capital. Measuring 30,000 m2, the museum is embedded in a specially laid-out part with ample water features, where visitors already encounter exhibits from the history of Hanoi and reconstructed traditional Vietnamese villages on entering the museum landscape. The whole National Convention Center is embedded in a park landscape, which integrates thematic and symbolic references to the Vietnamese culture and traditions. In front of the NCC to the south is a multifunctional, urban area, the “Fountain Square”. This square is intended for festivities and public occasions. The squares are flanked to east and the west by a sea of flags and two calm pools of water. The expressive undulating roof of the whole NCC accompanies the visitors on their way into the foyer. It rises up to an even greater height above the large congress hall, thus creating a distinctive landmark for the NCC Hanoi.
The farewell dinner was held in Meliã Hotel on the last day of the CAFEO and all the delegates had fun during the dinner. The delegates from each country were preforming their traditional songs and dances during the night. Of course, we presented ours too! It was feeling good and proud to present our “cuti-cuti Malaysia” and “1 Malaysia” to all other country. This is the most enjoyable night during the CAFEO even it come to be the end.
After the event, we took the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful place in Vietnam, Ha Long Bay. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. We had our unforgettable memory in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This conference has provided a good platform for the engineer to exchange skills and knowledge towards a better quality of life. On the year 2011, the CAFEO 2011 will be held in Brunei Darussalam on 27th November to 20 November 2011 and we hope to meet again our friend from ASEAN!
