In conjunction with IEM Engineering Week 2013, The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) has decided to organize Engineer’s Run 2013 once again to kick start IEM Engineering Week 2013 on the 7th September 2013 at Dataran MBPJ. This year’s edition shall be the continuation of last year event, looking to unite all engineers together through sports; with the aim of promoting a healthy lifestyle among engineers and creating awareness of the engineering profession to the public
Approximately 400 IEM members and non-members responded positively
towards this event by participating in the run. This year’s run received
overwhelming responses from both the engineers and public thus expanding the
categories into eight from last year’s six. In addition, a new breakthrough was
achieved where the institution also received bulk registration from companies.
On 7th September 2013, organizing committees and volunteers
from Runner’s Malaysia arrived early in the morning to prepare for the big day
before the runners’ arrival. The volunteers took up their respective
responsibilities as route marshals, time keepers, checkpoint officers,
beverages distributors, secretariat and crowd control personnel.
Participants register as early as 6.30am |
At 7.00 a.m., the crowd started to appear. Some participants came in
fancy costumes aligned with the best engineer’s costume competition such as a
lady who came dressed in safety vest and helmet. The event also saw family
participation in support of their family members who are engineers while some
group took the effort to wear team uniform for the run. After the registration,
everyone gathered to do some warm-up exercise prior to the race.

IEM President, Ir. Choo Kok Beng officially flagged off the start of
the race on 7.30 a.m. together with the organizing committee. As soon as the
starter’s gun went off, the participants began their 3.6-kilometre and 6.5-kilometre
run respectively. In about 13 minutes, our fastest runner came into sight with
a broad grin on his face. It was pretty amazing that he managed to complete the
race within such a short time. Again, it shows that engineers are good
sportsmen too.

Most of the participants were gathered back at the finishing point
after approximately 45 minutes. After
such a long run, it was the time for the refreshments to be served as
participants filled up their tummies while networking with one another. The
emcee also had a good interaction with the crowd before our guests of honour
gave their speeches
Both Ir. Prof. Dr. Wan Mahmood Bin Wan Abdul Majid and Ir. Choo Kok
Beng were invited to officiate the launching of the Engineering Week 2013 after
delivering their respective inspirational speeches.
The pinnacle moment of the
event was of course the prize giving ceremonies. Three grand prizes were given
away to three participants with the best engineer’s costume of the day. The
ceremony was followed by presentation of prizes to the top 3-5 finishers of
each category. Last but not least, a group picture was taken to commemorate the
memorable moments for every proud finisher of this event with the guest of
honours.
Of course, many more pictures were taken subsequently especially the finishers with their glorious medals and other funkier ones amongst the participants to mark the end of a successful run. The other climax of the day is the lucky draw announcements where participants were eagerly hoping for their numbers to be called. Amongst the lucky draw prizes were Beats by Dr. Dre’s Headphone, New Balance Bag, Adidas Push Up Bars, Nike Shoe Bag etc.
Overall, everything went smoothly and ended on time. All the
participants had a fun time perspiring and networking. IEM is one step closer
towards our goal of making the run an annual event with the 2nd
edition this year. The organizing committee has made several improvements based
on the comments and suggestions received last y
ear. We look forward to receiving more constructive comments and assistance in making the run even more successful in the coming years. It would be very encouraging to see IEM members getting involved in such events with their families to build a stronger bond amongst members.
